He was born in 1951, in Komotini, Greece. All through his life he has been involved in art; playing the guitar and producing songs since his childhood. “Bu Kalp Seni Unutur mu” (Can this heart ever forget you) and “Gönül” (Heart/Soul) are the widely known songs which he has composed.
He got acquainted with photography in 2008; he spent 2009 by taking the required courses at İFSAK. Samioğlu loves photography, therefore frequently expresses his regret because he was so late in getting involved. He is a member of İFSAK and FOTOGEN. He won national and international awards in many contests in which he participated. He acquired the title of AFIAP, which was given by FIAP (International Photography Federation). His projects are usually based on life in general and individual stories. Samioğlu is going on with his work, especially by portraying the streets, in which light and shadow play an important part by being strong graphical constituents.
For centuries, light and shadow have been depicted as the opposite of each other
in almost all fields of art. However, all objects confronting light are destined to stay on earth as shadows. We can call them the indescribable aesthetic of metaphysics or the union of opposites, but in any case, light and shadow can never exist without each other. If color is removed to leave its place to black and white, nothing will remain in the “space” of photography
except black holes and shining stars.
Özkan Samioğlu not only ignores color in his photographs, but also eliminates the transition points where black and white seem to compromise, thus he assumes the task of revealing an abstract world stretching out where the borders meet. In this way, the special field which can be seen in all its nakedness under the sun and is freed from the self-centered expression of greys, becomes the main constituent of his photographs.
